County Championships

Cambridgeshire County Championships 2019
Over three weekends in January and February of this year, 15 of our swimmers competed at the annual Swim England Cambridgeshire County Championships. The swimmers who achieve County qualifying times are amongst the top 20 in the county for each event by age group. Some exciting racing was anticipated, and for many of our swimmers, they were looking to see if they could race times to build on last years achievements.
Our team of fifteen, competed across 82 events. This was nearly twice the number of events entered as compared to 2018, which is a super achievement and highlights the growth all the swimmers have made over the course of the year.
Overall, 53 PB’s were swum, 16 events with Heat Declared Winners in the Top 8; 18 events with swimmers making the Finals and two thirds of the events entered, our swimmers were within the Top 10 in the County. Super swimming across the whole team.
From our older swimmers; Luca Strazzullo retained his first in county position from last year and swam away with Gold in 50Breaststroke Age 13. Luca is looking forward to returning to regionals this year to swim in all three distances of the breaststroke events this year.
Ewan Thompson swam in 3 finals, achieved 10PB’s and a regional time in the 200Breaststroke. Ewan is looking forward to joining Luca and experiencing his first taste of regionals in May.
Darcy Button swam off with a Bronze medal in100Backstroke Age 16. Darcy is also chasing down her regional time for the 50Freestyle and is within 0.24 seconds from it – a fingertip finish away!
Alice Jack swam a super 50Freestyle to drop 1.7 secs and achieve a PB of 31.91. Alice also finished 7thin the county in 200Backstroke age 15.
Amy Rickwood swam 2 personal bests in 50Backstroke and 50Freestyle and finished 7thin county in the final of the 50 back.
Emily Williams swam to finish in the Top 10 in the county for 8 out of 9 events and finished in 4thplace in the county in 200Fly age 15.
Ellie Thompson achieved top 8 final positions for 4 out of five of her events and came fourth in the 800Freestyle age 16 with a personal best of nearly half a minute faster.
Matt Albone swam PB’s in all 5 of his events and making the final for 50Backstroke finished in 7thplace in the county.
Max Lubello swam a personal best of 31.19 in his 50Freestyle and Hannah Williams finished in Top 10 in the county in her 50Fly.
Amongst the younger swimmers; Josh Needham swam 8 personal bests out of the 9 events he entered. He finished in the top 10 in 8 of those events and came 4thin the county in the 200Free with a 7second improvement on his previous time. Josh swam in his first ever final at this county championships and came in 7thin the 100m breaststroke.
Ruby Lane swam 2 personal bests for both events she entered and came 5thin the county for 50breaststroke – swimming to a time of 0.24 seconds outside a regional time. Another one with a fingertip finish away from her regionals!
Tilly Davis swam 8 personal bests out of 9 events and finished within the top 10 in the county in 8 of those events. Tilly also made her first ever finals at counties in 3 events, finishing in 6thposition for 50Backstroke, 100backstroke and 50 breaststroke.
Alexia Gilbert swam an outstanding PB of 36.77 in the 50Freestyle, knocking 2 seconds off her previous best and swimming two further PB’s in the 100free and 50backstroke. Alexia also finished in the top10 in the county for two events, finishing in 6thplace in the 200backstroke.
Millie Al-Ali swimming her first time at Counties, swam a super-fast 50Free in 37.90 seconds which puts her in third position in the age10 group and a promising position for next years Counties.
Congratulations and well done to all our swimmers at the Counties. The teamwork you demonstrate through your camaraderie and support for each other in your individual races is great to see. Keep on with the cheering! We are looking forward to watching you all progress over the year and build upon these achievements at next years County Championships.
We also look forward to seeing many more of the club compete at open meets during the year as you try for your county qualifying times in preparation for next year. Please do be aware that the current qualifying times are currently under review. As soon as the new times are issued, they will be shared across the club – watch this space to see what times you will need to be aiming for, for next year. One last thing! Do not forget that you need to be looking at the age category of how old you will be at end December 2020!
